Each Storytelling Night has a different theme. Each Storytelling Night has a different theme. This time, we’re exploring Ancestors: the people, stories and traditions that live on in us, inspired by the Mexican tradition Día de Muertos.
Each edition brings together 4–5 people who share an 8-minute personal story around a central theme. Everyone can join. The evening is hosted and curated by Maria Indjeian Diaz. The Storytelling Night takes place in a cosy setting at OASE, where you can sip and eat while listening to the stories unfold.
“As long as you live in this house..." is what she would say. Do you remember? You get it now. Perhaps it was her fire, her stubbornness, or the dramatic eyeliner framing the way she looked at the world. Her secrets poured into recipes, her stories woven into the way you dress, cook, celebrate or care for others. Do you hear their voice in the wind sometimes? It sounds so clear. Life is too short, don't take it that seriously, they used to say. Go on that date. Speak up, don't be shy, they'd say. Dinner time feels different now, with one less person at the table.
Día de Muertos is a beautiful Mexican tradition where our people, the ones who have become part of the sky, return to us once more. Us on planet Earth, we honor their memory. Their photos rest on an altar and guided by a path of cempasúchil, they feast on their guilty pleasures we've left for them. For some it's a quiet ritual, and for others an overnight festivity.
In this Storytelling Night edition, we’re honoring those who have become hummingbirds. Friends, family, pets, or neighbors. Even strangers. They may have passed to another facet, but the practice of remembrance keeps them very much alive. We tell the stories we inherited, the ones we still think about, and the ones we still could wish together. This last one , perhaps in another life.
